Perperikon

Perperikon is an ancient Thracian cult and fortress complex located in the Eastern Rhodopes. One of the most significant archaeological sites in the Balkans.

The Legend

More than 6,000 years ago, high in the rocks of the Rhodope Mountains, the Thracians carved a sacred sanctuary dedicated to the god Dionysus – the god of wine, ecstasy, and life.

According to legends, it was here that Orpheus – the greatest singer and priest of antiquity – performed his mysteries. They say his songs could tame wild beasts and make the stones weep.

Every spring, the priests lit a sacred fire at the top of the sanctuary. If the flame was tall and bright, the year would be blessed. If the flame flickered and died – disasters were expected.

People believe that the spirit of Orpheus still inhabits the rocks of Perperikon. On quiet nights, when the wind passes through the ancient corridors, a soft, sorrowful melody can be heard – his song for the lost Eurydice.
