Monyak Fortress
Above the Studen Kladenets dam rises Monyak Fortress – one of the highest and mightiest in the Rhodopes.
The Legend
According to legend, it was home to a brave voivode and his beloved, who defended their people from invaders.
When the enemies surrounded the fortress, the two chose to leap from the top rather than be captured.
It is said that on quiet nights their shadows still roam among the ruins, keeping the spirit of Monyak alive forever.
